Omega Centauri and G 1 like massive globular clusters the remnant cores of infalling dwarf galaxies ? – Dynamical constraints

چکیده

We simulate the result of orbital decay for a dwarf satellite galaxy in a disk galaxy potential. The peeling-off of the satellite by the strong tidal field within the disk of the host galaxy quickly reduces the satellite’s mass, and drastically slows down the decaying of the orbit. The result is generally a cluster on a large halo orbit, like the M54 cluster of the Sagittarius galaxy in the Milky Way and the massive G1 cluster in outer halo of M31. It is generally challenging for this mechanism to deliver globular cluster-mass objects to the observed very close-in orbit of Omega Cen unless the dwarf galaxy was born within a few scale lengths of the Galactic disk.

The most massive globular cluster in the Milky Way, ω Centauri, is thought to be the remaining core of a disrupted dwarf galaxy1, 2, as expected within the model of hierarchical merging3, 4. It contains several stellar populations having different heavy elemental abundances supplied by supernovae5 — a process known as metal enrichment. Although M22 appears to be similar to ω Cen6, other peculia...

Imprint of galaxy formation and evolution on globular cluster properties

We discuss the origin of physical properties of globular cluster systems (GCSs) in galaxies in terms of galaxy formation and evolution processes. Based on numerical simulations of dynamical evolution of GCSs in galaxies, we particularly discuss (1) the origin of radial density profiles of GCSs, (2) kinematics of GCSs in elliptical galaxies, (3) transformation from nucleated dwarf galaxies into ...

Formation of Globular Clusters: In and Out of Dwarf Galaxies

Despite the rapid observational progress in the study of young massive star clusters, the formation of globular clusters still remains poorly understood. Yet, it is emerging that globular cluster formation is intimately linked to the formation of the Galaxy. I discuss a generic scenario of the cluster formation within progenitor galaxies, based on the available observational constraints. The ol...

Are Globular Clusters the Remnant Nuclei of Progenitor Disk Galaxies?

The globular cluster system of a typical spheroidal galaxy makes up about 0.25% of the total galaxy mass (McLaughlin 1999). This is roughly the same mass fraction as contained in the nuclear star cluster (or stellar nucleus) present in most nearby low-mass galaxies. Motivated by this “coincidence”, this Letter discusses a scenario in which globular clusters of present-day galaxies are the survi...
